Consumer Sentiment Looking Brighter

Months of frigid consumer confidence appears to have thawed in August.

The National Statistical Office (NSO) said Tuesday that its monthly Consumer Sentiment Index (CSI) for August rebounded for the first time in three months.

The survey asked 2,000 urban households to assess their anticipation for the economy over the next six months. A reading of over 100 in the index suggests that the majority of consumers believe the current situation has improved in the last six months, while a reading below 100 indicates the opposite.

The CSI index reached 92 for August. The index dropped from 94.5 in May to 91.7 in June, and further to 90.8 in July.

The NSO also said that another index for consumers˘Ľ evaluation of their current economic status compared to six months ago rose to 63.9 in August. The evaluation index dropped to 62.7 in June from 67 in May, and to 62.1 in July.
